Amref Flying Doctors fatal crash

Hope Ahipeaud

Amref Flying Doctors confirms with deep sorrow that one of its aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS, registration 5Y-FDM, was involved in a fatal accident on 7 August 2025.

The aircraft departed Wilson Airport, Nairobi at 14:17 hours local time en route to Hargeisa, Somalia, where it was scheduled to pick up a patient for medical evacuation. Approximately three minutes after takeoff, the aircraft lost contact with the control tower. The tower immediately alerted Amref Flying Doctors, and efforts to reach the crew via VHF and satellite phone were unsuccessful.

On board were four crew members, a Captain, First Officer, Doctor, and Nurse. Tragically, two members of the community at the crash site also lost their lives. We confirm with deep regret that there were no survivors. Read the Amref Flying Doctors statement here.

Amref Health Africa, under which group the Amref Flying Doctors operate, held a memorial service to remember the extraordinary individuals whose lives were tragically cut short on Thursday, 7 August 2025.
